There are many use cases for footfall data collected from mobile devices, perhaps none more interesting than studying the ebb and flow of foot traffic in busy urban environments.
We took a deep dive into cities all across America to see what we could learn. What the data shows is that physical location is just the starting point to understanding how foot traffic comes to be, and what it can lead to.
What may not seem like much on the surface gets very rewarding when you apply location analytics alchemy to create strategic insights about human mobility, catchment areas, and implications for industry and the supply chain.

Seattle
The average monthly foot traffic for Seattle in the last 12 months was 5,352, this is a 3.8% decrease from the previous 12 months. Though foot traffic in Seattle is decreasing overall, zip code 98154 has seen a steady increase. SeaTac, Kirkland and Bellevue neighborhoods experienced the highest total foot traffic for Seattle.
Seattle saw the highest average monthly foot traffic (6,410) March 2021 through August 2021 with May 2022 having the lowest average foot traffic of 4,090 average visitors. May of 2021 had the highest total foot traffic (7,154) for the total time frame analyzed (06/01-2020-05/31/022).
The top industries include: Fast Food Restaurants, Supermarkets, Gasoline Stations, General Merchandise Stores, and Bottled Water Manufacturing. While the industry specific foot traffic patterns generally mirror the overall foot traffic pattern, there is a notable difference in the gasoline station industry. While the foot traffic trend in Seattle is decreasing, the gasoline station industry is experiencing an increase in average monthly foot traffic.
Los Angeles
The average monthly foot traffic for Los Angeles in the last 12 months was 6,389, this is a 15.7% increase from the previous 12 months. Though foot traffic in Los Angeles is increasing overall, zip code 93551 has seen a steady decrease. Northridge, Cerritos and West Torrance neighborhoods experienced the highest total foot traffic for Los Angeles.
Los Angeles saw the highest average monthly foot traffic (6,949) March 2021 through August 2021 with Jan 2021 having the lowest average foot traffic of 4,515 average visitors. April 2022 had the highest total foot traffic (7,713) for the total time frame analyzed (06/01-2020-05/31/022).
The top industries include: Fast Food Restaurants, Supermarkets, General Merchandise Stores, Gasoline Stations, and Bottled Water Manufacturing. While the industry specific foot traffic patterns generally mirror the overall foot traffic pattern of Los Angeles, there is a notable difference in the clothing store industry. While the foot traffic trend in Los Angeles is increasing, the clothing store industry is experiencing an decrease in average monthly foot traffic.
Houston
The average monthly foot traffic for Houston in the last 12 months was 5,391, this is a 3.9% decrease from the previous 12 months. Though foot traffic in Houston is decreasing overall, zip code 77070 has seen a steady increase. Lake Forest, Humble and Katy neighborhoods experienced the highest total foot traffic for Houston.
Houston saw the highest average monthly foot traffic (6,772) March 2021 through August 2021 with February 2022 having the lowest average foot traffic of 4,180 average visitors. May of 2021 had the highest total foot traffic (8,329) for the total time frame analyzed (06/01-2020-05/31/022).

The average monthly foot traffic for Chicago in the last 12 months was 4,709, this is a 7.8% decrease from the previous 12 months. Though foot traffic in Chicago is decreasing overall, zip code 60173 has seen a steady increase. Hoffman Estates, Near North Side and Orlando Park neighborhoods experienced the highest total foot traffic for Chicago.

While the industry specific foot traffic patterns generally mirror the overall foot traffic pattern of Chicago, there is a notable difference in the fast food industry. While the foot traffic trend in Chicago is decreasing, the fast food industry is experiencing an increase in average monthly foot traffic.
New York
The average monthly foot traffic for New York City in the last 12 months was 4,273, this is a 15.5% decrease from the previous 12 months. Though foot traffic in New York City is decreasing overall, zip code 10001 has seen a steady increase. Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen and The Garment District neighborhoods experienced the highest total foot traffic for New York City.
New York City saw the highest average monthly foot traffic (6,013) December 2020 through May 2021 with June 2020 having the lowest average foot traffic of 3,073 average visitors. May 2021 had the highest average foot traffic (6,805) for the total time frame analyzed (06/01/2020-05/31/022).
The top industries include: Limited-Service Restaurants, Commercial Banking, Pharmacies and Drug Stores, Supermarkets, and Fitness Centers. While the industry specific foot traffic patterns generally mirror the overall foot traffic pattern of New York City, there is a notable difference in the hotel industry. While the foot traffic trend in New York City is decreasing, the hotel industry is experiencing an increase in average monthly foot traffic.
